Group Therapy: Information for Clinicians

Group Therapy Pilot

Our group therapy pilot is suitable for adults aged 18 and over with depression and anxiety disorders in the mild to moderate range.

Places in our groups will be limited to 10 participants. It is essential that clients attending our group are amenable to the group therapy environment. Therefore, we will use the following

Exclusion Criteria:

An active risk to self or others

Active substance abuse

Personality disorder

We will accept referrals straight into groups from Clinical Psychologists and Consultant Psychiatrists. Clients who have self-referred will be asked to seek a referral from their GP to ensure they meet the above criteria.

The fee for participating in this group is $490 for the four 2-hour sessions.

In response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, our group therapy programme will use both in-person and online formats. Clients who are fully vaccinated can choose either an in-person or online group. Unvaccinated clients can take part in an online group. Group will run in the evenings for two hours with a short break in the middle. We hope to begin in early 2022.

Referrals can be made via ERMS to Amanda Baird at Christchurch PsychMed or by emailing

Why Pilot Group Therapy in the Private Sector?

In recent years there has been a significant increase in the demand for Clinical Psychology services. In response to this growing demand, we are piloting a group therapy treatment protocol. Our aim is to continue to provide high quality psychological therapy that is accessible to a greater number of people.

Group Therapy is a well-established way of treating a large range of mental health issues and has been shown to be at least as effective as individual therapy in alleviating mental health distress. Group therapy is also cheaper and provides greater accessibility over individual therapy.

Our group therapy protocol is based on Focused Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (FACT), a well-established treatment protocol with a solid evidence base showing its effectiveness in a relatively short-time.

As this is a pilot programme, we will assess the effectiveness of our group therapy. For this reason, we will ask participants to complete some questionnaires measuring improvements and consumer satisfaction with the group therapy process.
