We will accept referrals straight into groups from Clinical Psychologists and Consultant Psychiatrists. Clients who have been referred by their GP will need to a have an assessment with a Clinical Psychologist before beginning group.

The fee for participating in this group is $490 for the four 2-hour sessions.

In response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, our group therapy programme will flexibly move between in-person and online formats. Groups will run in-person at Christchurch PsychMed during Alert Level 1. During Alert Levels 2, 3 and 4 groups will be run over Zoom. Group will run on Monday evenings 7 – 9pm with a short break in the middle. We will begin in mid – October.

Why Pilot Group Therapy in the Private Sector?

In recent years there has been a significant increase in the demand for Clinical Psychology services. In response to this growing demand, we are piloting a group therapy treatment protocol. Our aim is to continue to provide high quality psychological therapy that is accessible to a greater number of people.

Group Therapy is a well-established way of treating a large range of mental health issues and has been shown to be at least as effective as individual therapy in alleviating mental health distress. Group therapy is also cheaper and provides greater accessibility over individual therapy.

Our group therapy protocol is based on Focused Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (FACT), a well-established treatment protocol with a solid evidence base showing its effectiveness in a relatively short-time.

As this is a pilot programme, we will assess the effectiveness of our group therapy. For this reason, we will ask participants to complete some questionnaires measuring improvements and consumer satisfaction with the group therapy process.
